Expertise, training, exchange of experiences and support to the sugar industry

  • Manage alternative financing sources (impact investment funds) in the sustainability processes of the sugar sector in Mesoamerica.

  • Coordinates the advice of industrial and / or agricultural experts necessary to be able to support the implementation of the best practices and methodologies approved in the management plan.

  • Provide the necessary advice to the participating agricultural producers and / or technical personnel (field) and the factory workers during the project "Sustainable Development of the Sugarcane Agribusiness".

  • Facilitate the use of effective tools (BONSUCRO calculator, training methodologies) that favor productivity, efficiency, and the use of the best agricultural and industrial process practices.

  • Promote the exchange of experiences with other successful companies and groups of farmers to share best practices and lessons learned.

  • Promote the formation of multi-stakeholder platforms that foster dialogue and good relations between different sectors for sustainable landscape management.

  • Activate through different means (physical and online - website PanAmericaña) learning communities promoting the exchange of experiences with other successful companies and producer groups to share good practices and lessons learned.

  • Design and develop training materials required in the internal management of biodiversity conservation, protection and environmental management, personal protection, health and safety at work.

SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAINS

Solidaridad, through its PanameriCaña program, has managed and implemented pilot projects for the sugar value chain in Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. In partnerships with mills in the region, and with substantial co-financing and commitment, PanameriCaña  develops a sustainable model, validates tools generated by the project, and supports the application of good practices suggested by the BONSUCRO standard to help mills prepare for subsequent sustainability certifications.

 

By improving the social and working conditions of workers, and  implementation of environmentally friendly practices and techniques, and the sustainability and performance of the productive system of sugar cultivation, opportunities in international markets are increased and the sugar industry is positioned in the region at a global level.

 

PanameriCaña recognizes the benefits that public-private partnerships offer and believes they represent a mutually-beneficial option to improve productivity, quality, and the social and environmental conditions within the industry, by leveraging financial resources from reliable, transparent and committed sources in sustainability schemes.

COMMITMENTS OF PANAMERICAÑA AND PARTNERS

  • Solidaridad through its initiative PanameriCaña analyzes the opportunities and investors for the selection and involvement on Impact Investment Funds to leverage resources required for sustainability processes in the sector.

  • Respects the autonomy, the nature of the work, its organizational forms, regulatory provisions and work philosophies of the institutions that are part of the program.

  • Facilitates communication between member organizations to share and exchange information in an open way in order to maximize interventions and collaboration opportunities.

  • Promote and maintain ethics, respect for the property and confidentiality of the information provided and / or generated in the execution of the project.

  • Analyzes and gives the corresponding credit, result of the mutual collaboration that has been done together, by the technicians or consultants involved.

  • Oversees the management of best practices for the modernization of work in the sugar industry in the region, particularly, including, among others, the elimination of child labor and the creation of favorable work conditions.

  • Cooperates in activities related to the work of the neighboring communities and with the sugar cane suppliers, including in the promotion of better agricultural practices that lead to a reduction of pollution of the water bodies and coastal areas.

  • Cooperates in activities aimed at optimize working conditions in the sugar industry in the region, taking into account the safety of workers, adherence to relevant labor laws, respect for the rights of indigenous groups and the promotion of gender equality.

  • Participates jointly in the measurement of the monitoring and evaluation indicators of the project: "Sustainable development of sugarcane agroindustry".
